There is not a lot to complain about in Skyrim, but a game that you will spend over 100 hours in really does need a fairly functional overworld map. There is no denying that the map in Skyrim is much better than Oblivion, but it still leaves some things to be desired.

1) Why on EARTH are the Dunmer ruins not on the map at all? When you find one, they do not display on the map as a marker of any kind. This is mind boggling, considering some of the best weapons, armor, and smithing items are found within.

2) Why doesn't the map have some sort of legend of any kind, so it is very clear what each icon means.

3) Why doesn't the (missing) legend allow me to toggle on/off specific icons on the map? It gets pretty darn crowded after 100 hours of wandering around Skyrim, and being able to toggle items on/off would sure make navigating the game a bit easier.

4) Why can't the map display the (discovered) paths up mountains? One of my other major frustrations in this game is that you may take a half hour trying to find the ONE way to get to the summit of a mountain. A game like this does NOT need to be artificially lengthened like that.

All four of these things will likely come in the form of mods for the PC version of the game. My fourth issue has already been addressed, somewhat, with a Google Street View-type view of the world map.

Yes, this glitch has a few different incarnations, isn't that just grand.

I will try and be as spoiler free as possible. Note that if you are on PC you have one thing the PS3/360 version does not: the console. Like other TES games, you can use the console to step through a quest just like you would debug a program. I am not here to address the PC version or the console in Skyrim. The above link has the correct console commands for you.

During your investigation go back to the shrine EVERY TIME and talk to Eltrys. The quest markers DO NOT tell you to do this. For one, you will get more money out of him, but the real reason is that the quest will not completely bug out. You need to investigate 2 people, investigate both and report to Eltrys. This is one quest where it really DOES NOT help to do all the misc. parts at once. That seems to cause this wonderful little glitch.

After investigating both persons, you will want to go to the treasure house and speak with this guy there. And finally DO NOT go and kill Nepos, as much as you would like to at this point. That may/may not result in the glitch, too (I did not try every permutation here, I do in fact have real work to do today).

Go back to the shrine once you are done in the treasure house. You will immediately be greeted by guards, the quest will complete, and the following quest will start right away!

The Glitch: You head back to the shrine and there is a white waypoint parker hovering next to the right column, but not over the guard himself. Some have said to just use the Wait command for an hour. This did not work for me. Complete the quest as stated above, and everything will come out peachy. Complete the following quest and you will get all your stuff back safely.

      Today Hulu Plus is out of preview, something that I have been using since July. I have been very happy with the service both on my PS3 and my iPod Touch. Now I like it even more.

Origionally priced at $9.99 a month - which is what all Preview users have been paying - now costs you $2 less. Not only that, they are taking good care of us early adopters:

Since we're now offering Hulu Plus at a lower price than during the preview, your subscription fee has been lowered to $7.99/month, and on your next billing cycle, we'll also automatically credit your account with $2 for each month you've been a subscriber. In addition, we're now offering a 1-week free trial for all new subscribers, so we'll be issuing you an additional $2 credit since the free trial wasn't in place during the preview.

They also have a nice referral plan in place now, so if you sign up here you get 2 weeks free trial and I get 2 weeks free, that is not a bad deal at all.

They have expanded the amount of content that is available on Hulu Plus (meaning on devices like the PS3 and iPod Touch) and even added a couple more devices since they started the Preview program (4th generation iPod Touch, for example).
      As a (very) early adopter to Hulu Plus, I encountered a lot of bugs along the way. Mostly due to video playback on the PS3. Commercials were playing when they were not supposed to, and as a result the actual TV show/movie would not actually continue. Many times the commercial would try and play over and over in a continuous loop. This was frustrating!

For my troubles I received 2 months credit on my account, like I said above, they really take care of people. Not only that, but @hulu_support are a top notch bunch of people running their Twitter account.

I notice a $10 credit on my account, marked November 17 (today). And my next bill won't actually be until December 29 when it will come to all of $5.98.

For once the early adopter does not get screwed over. Nice job Hulu!

Best Practices: Creating KML/KMZ; Google Earth Browser Plugin

I have spent the last couple weeks working with KML and KMZ files that were provided by a third party. While most if not all of these suggestions or "Best Practices" may seem like basic knowledge to any web designer/developer, they are not common knowledge to all. My job (one of many) is to make a web site perform well, load fast, and generally not seem "broken" or "buggy" to the user. In this case I had to figure out exactly how to reduce the size of KMZ files, and get them loading propery in Google Earth in the browser.

Through trial and error, and by that I mean a lot of trials, and a lot of errors, I have come to understand that the Desktop version of Google Earth is much more forgiving than its Browser Plugin counterpart. For the project, we are embedding KMZ into a web page, and not providing a link to download and then view in the Desktop version of Google Earth.

There are a lot of companies out there that provide Google and Bing mapping services. Some even develop software that allows you to "easily" generate the Google Earth files. This information will benefit both software engeneers and those who create Google Earth files themselves. Some of this advice will even be meaningful if you are only producing KMZ for the Desktop.

Do not use Windows Bitmap (.bmp) files. I know some of you out there are died in the wool Windows users. Yes, when you zip up the KMZ, the BMP files compress down, but why use 1,500 BMP images at 400 kb each when you can use 1,500 GIF images at 8 kb each? You can do the math on that one. At the end of they day, no matter if the KMZ is for Desktop or Browser consumption, you want the end-user to be served your files as fast as possible. I can take a 55 mb KMZ and turn it into a 4 mb KMZ just by converting to GIF. You could use a Photoshop Action, or if you have ImageMagick installed on your computer/server, write a very small bash script to do the conversion.

Do not use Windows backslashes in your URLs to assets inside of the KML. Yet another Windows anomaly, no matter if it is C:\\ or Assets\ it does not matter. Guess what? Mac or Linux systems, Web browsers do not understand what the heck that backslash is. Don't use it. Ever.

Do not bloat your exported KMZ file with useless garbage. For example, out of 322 mb (uncompressed) of assets, 110 mb of this was .log and .csv files that were used in the creation of the KML files. If your software is written to include these files in the generated KMZ, you are doing no one a favor, especially the end-user.

Do not use spaces in file names. Not in the KML, not in the KMZ, not in the compressed folders, and especially not in the image file names. This is trivial to web geeks, but Linux Web servers do not like spaces in file names. Modern web browsers will see a space and URL encode it with %20, but the Google Earth Browser Plugin will not display images referenced if they have spaces in their names. Don't ask me why, but Google Earth Desktop has no problem with this at all. Spaces in names is a bad practice. I don't care if you use IIS or Apache, don't put spaces in file names.

Do not use special characters in file names. Again, this is basic stuff to any web or Linux geek, but special characters, such as parenthesis or equal signs, are a no-no in folder and file names. And again the Google Earth Browser Plugin will not display images referenced if they have special characters in their names. Don't ask me why, but Google Earth Desktop has no problem with this at all. Stick with alphanumeric names, dashes and underscores. This is very basic Web Principles 101. These "rules" also happen to translate over to the desktop - both spaces and special characters.

Bandwidth, file space, RAM concers: This is mainly relavent if you are actually putting the KMZ files up on a web server - for public download or just to embed in a web page, that does not matter - you have got to keep the file size of the KMZ as small as possible. Even if you are giving the KMZ to someone, you do not want to give them a 233 mb file. In the case of embedding the KMZ and letting the Google Earth Browser Plugin do all the work, you are going to kill your bandwidth, and make your server work extra hard, if you are serving up large KMZ files.

Instead of placing the image assets inside the KMZ, place them on the web server and reference them with a FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name, starting with http://). So now you have turned that 4.2 mb file into a 700 kb file (remember it was originally over 50 mb with the bitmap and other junk files in it). Your web server processes and bandwidth bill will thank you for taking the time to do all this. Even if you have a dedicated server, there is no need for the extra processes and RAM usage required to serve up such large files. And if you need your file to be self-contained, then skp the FQDN image links, but you still end up saving your client and their end users a lot of time.

Post-processing concerns: This all leads to where I am now. I have been given huge KMZ files and been tasked with making them usable for a web audience. The following section might get a little technical, so if you are not comfortable with the command line I suggest befrending a nerd, geek, or server monkey. Money always helps but you could always go for the bear necessities in life - you know, like a case of Mountain Dew. Regular Expressions have a stigma, but they are the answer to everything needed to take a 50 mb (and larger) file down to under 1 mb for consumption on the web. Below are some code snippets, you can use them as a starting block. My Perl and bash scripts are specific to my needs, so they really won't help you much.

Of note: While the files provided to me (or you) may have never been intended to be used on the web, adhering to accepted practices would cut out 2.5 of the 4 steps below. If all that needed done was to modify the IMG SRC in the KML, Regular Expressions would not be required.

First we need to convert those gargantuan bitmap files to GIF. If you create an Action in Photoshop, be sure to use Save for Web as it will convienently change all spaces to dashes for you.

Second we need to sanitize (strip out) the special characters, my case requires parathesis sanitation. This is best left to sed and a shell script. Relavent code below:
new_filename=`echo $filename | sed 's/[()]//g'`
You can save even more time with your shell script by combining sed and ImageMagick, sanitize and then convert BMP to GIF. Or you can use Photoshop to automate the conversion. Totally up to you.
$gif_filename=`echo $filename | sed 's/\.bmp/.gif/'`
convert $new_filename $gif_filename

Finally we need to modify the KML to match the new file names, with dashes, and without parenthesis. This could be done in any launguage, PHP and Perl being popular options. Whichever language you are using, you can use Regular Expressions to find and replace everything including those Windows-only backslashes, replacing them with your FQDN, swap spaces for dashes, sanitize parenthesis, and change the file reference from .bmp to .gif - all in one fell swoop. Here are the relavent lines of code. Obviously it is quite handy that in my case the width and height of each IMG tag was the same.
while (m/(.*<img src=")(Profile[\\\/])(.+?)(" width="457" height="305" \/>.*)/sg) {
$str =~ s/ /-/g;
$str =~ s/[()]//g;
$str =~ s/\.bmp/.gif/g;
print $pre."http://domain.com/images/".$str.$post;

The final step is to upload all your new GIF images and re-package the KMZ file. You can now delete the entire assets folder, in my case, "Profile" and zip it all back up. If you are using Windows you can edit the .kmz in place with WinZip or WinRAR, which is nice. If you are on a Mac, like me, here is a tip: When you zip up the KML and other folders (generally Placemark icons and 3D models) be sure and select just those items and not the surrounding folder! Mac OS X likes to make a new folder out of stuff you zip up, which can be annoying. Finally rename your zip to .kmz and you are all set. Test it in Google Earth Desktop and then upload and test it on your web server.

So why did we go to all this trouble? Let me ask you a question: Would you wait for a web site to load a 50 mb file in the background? What if it timed out? Would you really have the patience to try and load it again? Time matters to your end-users, and seconds matter on the web. Beyond this reason, bandwidth and CPU cycles are commodities that cost money in the web hosting world, a lot of money.

In conclusion: If your company produces Google Earth documents it behooves you to keep within established standards for web design and think about the people who will be using the mapping data the most. It also helps to have a better understanding of the idiosyncrasies present in the Desktop and Browser Plugin version of Google Earth; this is similar to understanding the finer points of designing for Firefox/Safari/Internet Explorer (thought to be fair, Google Earth issues are much less painfull).

Cut the bloat and be concious of demanding users, desktop, online, mobile, it does not matter. They want to see stuff now-now-now. These are not unreasonable expectations.

But considering that it means the sender (who is in my Friends List) would have to be stupid enough to believe it and send it on... well lets just say I am pretty sure we have no hope left for humanity. It is the classic chain email thing "send this to X people and you will win $1 M dollars" bull shit.

Then I got a second one, and now a third. It is not like I haven't seen numerous MS Points scams come across my Live account, it just needs to stop. Here is the message, transcribed with all grammar/punctuation intact. Never a subject to the message:

Hello there Playstation Network user I am Kevin Butler from Sony Entertainment Company I would like to stop this spaming rumor about Playstation Network users have to pay to playing online,please help me stop the rumor spaming if you send this to 35 people you will be granted $37 on playstation store just check your wallet money on playstation store.This message is tracked by me Kevin and Sony Entertainment Company.

      I recently wrote about my impressions on Blogcritics. Check it out if you have not. Saturday night the show was at 7 PM EST instead of 9 PM EST, a much better time of day if you ask me. Again there was no lag to speak of, but Chris Cashman and Jade kept getting cut off mid-sentence for the first part of the show. I guess that cannot be helped. Jade is from Xbox Canada, and was on for a fair bit of the entire show.

There was one person who won it all, beating all 100 Mob members. That was pretty cool to see. Of course in the beta no Microsoft Points are awarded, but winning $125 worth of MSP for a few minutes of trivia questions does not seem that difficult (until you are in the hot seat, of course). They got the woman on the phone to talk about getting through 15 questions and beating the Mob. The entire "live" experience is really a neat thing, on so many levels.

I hope we see a beta soon in the States, and I really hope we hear that 1 vs. 100 goes live for real at E3 this year.

It says here I am not to spoil the game's "special, super secret" character in my review. I guess I have some playing to do to beat it and find out. Ah well, the game looks good and plays like Punch-Out!! so we are safe there. Have to recommend ditch the Nunchuck and use the Classic Control scheme for this one.

I think this game is going to mean more for those among us who actually played it on the NES. Lots of fun, and nostalgia. I will be talking about this on our radio show tomorrow and will have a full review up on Blogcritics Gaming.

Fallout 3 Game Corruption Problem

      I have a problem but it is not straightforward by any means.

I just got a brand new 360, Arcade, as my last one's DVD drive died. I had an issue that my Gamer Profile got corrupt when trying to use my hard drive on a different 360 until I could afford to purchase a new one of my own.
      So as of yesterday, I am back on Live, with a brand new 360, and my existing Elite HDD.

Seeing as I have been off of Live for over 3 months I had not downloaded any of the Fallout 3 DLC yet. So, just bought and downloaded all 3 packs yesterday.

Today I fire up the game and it says "Loading DLC" and so I go to Load my game, and about 80% of my game save files say Corrupt File. The only ones that do NOT say Corrupt File are from my secondary character, I had started an assassin chick, maybe 10 hours into that campaign.

My main character has about 100 hours, and has completed the game. I was hoping to open the auto save before the end of the game, so I could start playing the DLC.

So I go back to the Dashboard. In Memory it shows ALL my Fallout 3 saves (I have a lot, I like to save out to different Save files often). None have the yellow warning icon on them when a file is corrupted in the Dashboard, they all have the Fallout 3 face icon on them.

It does not matter if my Gamer Profile resides on the HDD or my MU that I bought to put my Profiles on recently.

Here is where things get complicated, and by that I mean there are too many variables here for me to really know what is going on. I am sorry to have to do this, but I need to give you some background of the situation.

Shortly after I published that, I got a phone call from Microsoft. I guess an exec. saw that and had a Senior Support Specialist contact me about the Gamertag corruption problem. Now, none of my game saves or any other data on the drive was showing or is showing (now) the yellow warning icon in the Dashboard. But as soon as I stuck my 120 GB drive on another Xbox 360, I had corrupt Gamer Profiles. I recovered them yesterday to my MU just fine.

So I do not know if the Fallout 3 Game Saves were corrupt before I downloaded the 3 DLC packs or not. I don't know if the game saves were corrupted because of my Gamer Profile corruption, or if the DLC has messed up my game saves. Also don't know if the game's Title Update messed things up. All I know is every single one of my game saves from my primary character says Corrupt File inside of Fallow 3's Load screen but seem fine in the Dashboard.

Now, I loaded a few more games up. GTA IV save is intact, and Rock Band 2 save is intact. All games I load up again seem to work. So this has something to do with Fallout 3 and only Fallout 3. I have tried to troubleshoot this problem as best I could, I hope that someone at Bethesday may have an answer for me. Because honestly, as much as I want to play the DLC, I might not have downloaded it *right now* had I known this would happen. Because it looks like I am going to have to play the game over again, save for about 10 hrs. from the beginning of the game.

Just to make sure this doesn't run in the family, I popped in Oblivion. I own all the DLC packs for that (no, not the horse armor) and I had no problem loading my main character, who is in the middle of Shivering Isles. So that game is fine, too.

Also, when I started, well every game I have mentioned above, there was an auto update to them. This is because as part of the troubleshooting for my bad DVD drive, the tech. had me clear the HDD cache. That did not fix the DVD drive problem (of course, I knew it would not), it only means that every game I load is going to have a Title Update.

I have emailed Pete Hines at Bethesda to see if they can give me any insight into the situation. I also posted this to the Official Bethesda forums. Fun stuff, isn't it?

      Sometimes we get oddball stuff from PR. We recently worked with a firm on a promotion for The Apprentice. One of our other writers wrote the article, I think it was Josh, so I was surprised to get a package in the mail.

It had a "You're Fired" baseball cap and a coupon for $6.50 off All Small and Mighty. I will have to take a photo of the ball cap.

      Do you smell that, its the smell of bull crap. Here, read the lede:

The new Nintendo DSi handheld gaming console, which arrived in stores April 5 for $170, is a quantum leap forward from the similar-looking DS Lite. It adds another layer of applications and functions to the core DS system to become the first Nintendo handheld that's plenty of fun even without the games.

Fox headlines the review as "A Quantum Leap Forward."

I could literally pick this apart line by line, but I won't. However this one does stand out:

The single new feature promised in the DSi — as in "eye," or "individualization" — sounded like a throwaway gimmick.

Really? Only one new feature promised? I guess DSiWare doesn't count. Look, I am not saying my review is the best one you will read, but at least it is "fair and balanced," which cannot be said about FOX News.

OK sorry I can't stop at just one.

The previously existing Pictochat and Download Play functions are applications as well, but it's two of the new apps — called just "Camera" and "Sound" — that really sell the DSi.

This entire review reminds me of complaining that Time Crisis 4 doesn't have on screen reticles. You can go buy a PMP (that is Personal Media Player for those not paying attention) and get better "Camera" and "Sound" capabilities for under $100. You will get a much higher resolution camera, and OMFG even MP3 support. Oh and video, too.

Little Jonny (or Big Jonny for that matter) may cream his pants over being able to play with his photos or music, but that is not going to keep him entertained very long. This is a portable gaming console, what sells this specific one is the new distribution channel, that being DSiWare.

Also "Wario Ware Slapped!" (it's called Wario Ware Snapped - get it, like snapping a photo) only recognizes the silhouette of your face and hands. Or did you not see Nintendo demo it at GDC this year.

There is nothing worse than misinforming the user in a brand new product review.
